Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is produced by methanogenic archaea. Methanotrophic micro-organisms diminish the amount of liberated methane by aerobic and anaerobic methane oxidation, processes that are coupled to energy conservation and growth. In Dr. Welte’s group we are studying the physiology, biochemistry and ecology of methanogenic and anaerobic methanotrophic archaea as well as the interplay between them in order to better predict the greenhouse effect caused by biogenic methane emission in man-made and natural ecosystems.
