Welcome Message
Dear Colleagues,
The Organising Committee of the XXIII Jornadas de Biologia de Leveduras Professor Nicolau van Uden, would like to announce that this meeting will be held in Hotel Termas da Curia, on the 9th and 10th of October 2026.
Once again, we are excited to bring together the fungal research community. In this edition, we are broadening the scope of the meeting to include the participation of our colleagues working on fungi other than yeasts. We intend to create new synergies, exchange ideas, and share the latest knowledge across the following topics:
- Genomics and Evolution
- Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology
- Health
- Fermented Foods and Beverages
- Drug and stress resistance
- Adaptation, Cell Death and Ageing
We hope these two days will foster fruitful discussions, collaborations, and innovations that will enrich our community and inspire fungal research among early scientists and students.

The Organising Committee
Prof. Nicolau van Uden
- He was born in the Netherlands. Naturalized Portuguese in 1975.
- Degree in Medicine, University of Vienna, Austria. PhD in Biology, University of Coimbra.
- Aggregate in Microbiology, New University of Lisbon.
- Director of the Microbiology Laboratory (1966-91) and of the Teaching Department of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC).
- Promoter and director of the international monographic courses “Estudos Avançados de Oeiras” (IGC, 1969-91).
- Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (1979-91).
- He initiated and directed the Portuguese Yeast Culture Collection (now PYCC, 1952-91).
- Doctor Honoris Causa, University of the Orange Free State, South Africa.
- Honorary Member of the Portuguese Society of Biochemistry and of the Spanish Societies of Microbiology and Biochemistry.
