Professor Thierry Troosters (ISI H-index 76) is a physiotherapist and professor of
Rehabilitation Sciences. He obtained his PhD in 1999 under the guidance of his
mentors Prof Rik Gosselink and Prof Marc Decramer. Currently Thierry heads the
department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the KU Leuven (Leuven, Belgium). Prof
Troosters has been the president of the European Respiratory Society in 2019-
2020, he is a member of the GOLD science committe and serves on the Federal
Council of Physiotherapy in Belgium.
Along with the Respiratory Division at the University Hospitals in Leuven, he
investigates the devastating non-respiratory consequences of lung diseases, often induced by
physical inactivity or exacerbations.
With his group he is looking at optimizing and modernizing exercise training strategies for patients
with lung disease and he explores strategies to measure and enhance physical activity. His group
attempts to increase the proportion of responders to exercise and physical activity interventions
by understanding the mechanisms of action of these interventions and adapting interventions to
individuals with lung diseases.
With their group they pioneered on investigating the impact of physical inactivity patients with
COPD and other respiratory conditions including cystic fibrosis and lung transplantation. Thierry
has been the PI of the IMI project PROactive and was the COPD and KU Leuven lead in the IMI
project Mobilise-D. Clinical studies are conducted together with Prof Wim Janssens Prof Daniel
Langer and Prof Stephanie Everaerts at UZ Leuven often in collaboration with Prof Heleen
Demeyer of the University of Ghent.
