Vincent Cottin is Professor of Respiratory Medicine and Coordinator of the National Reference Center for Rare Pulmonary Diseases at the Louis Pradel Hospital and the Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, France. The center has pioneered the clinical care and research of patients with rare and so- called orphan lung diseases for many years, and has set up the OrphaLung network coordinated by Professor Cottin of 29 expert centers throughout France. The center has been recognized as the first center in France to be part of the European Reference Network for interstitial lung disease (ERN- LUNG, ILD).
Professor Cottin’s research interests include rare ‘orphan’ pulmonary diseases including idiopathic interstitial pneumonias and all interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). He has contributed to characterizing the syndrome of combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema (CPFE). He is an investigator and member of the Steering Committee, or Data Safety Monitoring Board, of many clinical trials on IPF, PPF and on pulmonary hypertension associated with ILD, and is conducting personal research on combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema and other ILDs as well as pulmonary hypertension associated with ILD.
Professor Cottin has edited the second edition of a book on orphan lung diseases. He is an appointed Fellow of the European Respiratory Society (FERS), has been awarded the ERS Gold Medal of IPF, and is an elected member of the prestigious Fleischner society. He was selected in 2024 and 2025 as a Highly Cited Researcher™.
