Deolinda Flores Grant

Professor Deolinda Flores (1958-2025) was an internationally respected scientist, educator, and mentor whose career left a lasting impact on the field of organic petrology and coal geology. Throughout her academic life, she made outstanding contributions to both fundamental and applied research, particularly in coal petrology, organic geochemistry, palynofacies analysis, and the reconstruction of the thermal evolution of sedimentary and coal basins.

She authored more than 135 peer-reviewed scientific publications and delivered over 300 presentations at national and international conferences, reflecting the breadth, quality, and influence of her scientific work. Her research played an important role in advancing the understanding of organic matter in geological systems and its applications in energy and environmental studies.

As a dedicated teacher and supervisor, Professor Deolinda Flores trained and mentored numerous undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral students, many of whom have continued successful careers in academia, industry, and research institutions. She was widely admired for her commitment to education, scientific rigor, and generosity as a mentor.

Her service to the international scientific community was equally remarkable. Professor Deolinda Flores held several leadership positions within the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP), including Chair of Commission I, Secretary of Commission I, Archivist, Council Member, and Chair and Honorary Member of the Accreditation Sub-Committee. She also served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Coal Geology and contributed extensively to editorial and peer-review activities across numerous scientific journals.

The Deolinda Flores Grant honours her scientific legacy, her dedication to education, and her lifelong commitment to supporting and inspiring new generations of researchers in organic petrology.

Purpose

The Deolinda Flores Grant is intended to support the attendance of an MSc or PhD student at the 77th Annual Meeting of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP), to be held in Portugal. Eligible research must demonstrate the relevance, utility, and significance of 77th Annual Meeting of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP) (including coal petrology, kerogen petrology, organic geochemistry, and related disciplines) in addressing the student’s thesis research problem.

Eligibility

The Deolinda Flores Grant is open to students who have submitted an abstract for oral presentation at the 77th ICCP Annual Meeting. To be eligible, the abstract must be accepted, and delivery of the oral presentation is a mandatory requirement for receipt of the award.

Awards

One (1) monetary award of €1,500 will be granted. The grant also includes complimentary registration for all meeting activities, including the Training Course, Commission Meetings, Symposium, Conference Dinner, and Field Trip.

The award funds will be transferred to the recipient prior to the 77th ICCP Meeting or provided during the Welcome Ceremony. Please note that if the awardee requires a visa to travel to the host country, proof of a valid visa must be submitted to the Organizing Committee before the funds are transferred.

A complete application should include:

  • Submission of an abstract via the 77th ICCP Meeting Webpage;
  • A cover letter requesting travel funds and explaining how attendance at the 77 th ICCP.
    Annual Meeting will benefit the applicant’s research (submitted as separate document);
  • A letter of support from your primary faculty advisor (submitted as separate document).

Selection

Applications will be reviewed and ranked by a committee of three members of the Scientific Committee. The award recipient will be selected based on the quality of the research and the potential impact of the work within the field of organic petrology. Applicants will be informed of the award decision no later than July 15.
