Organic Petrology plays a key role in understanding the processes that govern Earth’s carbon cycle and in shaping strategies for a more sustainable, low-carbon future. This symposium will explore how deep- time sedimentary archives provide essential insights into modern climate change, the energy transition, and the responsible use of natural resources. By bridging geological knowledge with contemporary climate policy and sustainability challenges, the event aims to highlight the relevance of Earth’s carbon archives in guiding tomorrow’s energy and environmental strategies.
The Academy of Sciences of Lisbon is one of the oldest national scientific institutions in continuous existence. It was founded on 24 December 1779, during the reign of Queen Maria I, under the motto inspired by a verse from Phaedrus:
Nisi utile est quod facimus stulta est gloria / If what we do is not useful, vain is the glory.
One of the aims of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon is to provide advice based on scientific knowledge, as a fundamental instrument for the qualification and efficiency of public policies. In this sense, the Academy aims to broaden and enrich this mission, in its capacity as an advisory institution to the sovereign bodies of the Portuguese state in all areas of knowledge, to contribute to society's appropriation of the main science-based themes relevant to public policies and to promote greater convergencer and more intense and regular dialogue, not only between the national scientific community and political decision-makers, but also with similar institutions abroad.
